At 52, former Deputy Speaker and sports patron Mikee Romero continues to compete at the highest levels of world polo, defying the usual retirement age for athletes.
Romero led his team, GlobalPort-Passion For Polo, to a semifinal finish in the C.V. Whitney Cup, a runner-up spot in the USPA Bronze Cup, and a quarterfinal appearance in the U.S. Open Polo Championship.
He became the first Filipino to break into the Top 25 of the World Polo Tour amateur rankings and remains the highest-ranked Southeast Asian player.
Romero’s achievements have boosted the global profile of Philippine polo and earned him a special citation from the Philippine Sportswriters Association.
Despite the physical and mental demands of polo, Romero shows that age is no barrier to excellence in competitive sports.
