The Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) emphasized the urgent need to remove gender barriers in the maritime industry, where women continue to face bias, limited training access, and outdated stereotypes.
PCW Chairperson Ermelita Valdeavilla highlighted that while women have proven their capabilities in various maritime roles, structural challenges still hinder their full participation and advancement.
A survey by the International Maritime Organization revealed that only 19 percent of the maritime workforce are women, with just 1 percent working at sea.
Additionally, a 2022 study by the National Maritime Polytechnic found that less than half of the surveyed shipping companies have formal gender equality policies.
Valdeavilla called on the industry to ensure true inclusivity by addressing discrimination and fostering respect, opportunity, and support for women.
