The Philippines and Japan have finalized an agreement for the transfer of five retired Abukuma-class destroyer escorts to the Philippine Navy, with delivery expected within the next two to three years.
Gilberto Teodoro Jr. said only administrative details remain before the deal is completed.
The transfer will mark Japan’s first overseas transfer of retired surface combatants under its defense equipment transfer framework.
The Philippine military will assess the vessels before integrating them into its naval fleet and prepare additional docking facilities.
The agreement reflects the growing defense partnership between the Philippines and Japan amid regional security concerns.
