PAGASA on Friday said a tropical depression east of the Philippines could enhance the southwest monsoon or “habagat,” bringing widespread rains across much of the country from Sunday through early next week.
The weather disturbance, located 1,735 kilometers east of Eastern Visayas, is expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Saturday evening or Sunday morning, when it will be named “Francisco.”
Forecasters said the system could intensify into a severe tropical storm or typhoon while remaining over the sea during its stay within PAR.
Although current projections show the cyclone curving away from the country, PAGASA said it is not ruling out the possibility of landfall.
The agency advised the public to monitor updates as the weather system continues to develop.
