Former senator Franklin Drilon said the Senate’s greatest challenge is ensuring a fair and credible impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, rather than resolving its recent leadership dispute.
Citing the impeachment of former president Joseph Estrada, Drilon warned that any attempt to suppress evidence or conceal the truth could spark public outrage and political instability.
He urged senators to conduct the proceedings impartially and advised against appointing an impeachment manager, recommending that Senate Secretary Renato Bantug oversee the trial’s administrative functions instead.
Drilon also cautioned that political infighting in the Senate is likely to continue despite the election of Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian.
He said the impeachment trial and the approaching 2028 elections would remain key sources of tension within the chamber.
