Justice Secretary Fredderick Vida on Wednesday warned that anyone who helped Sen. Bato dela Rosa evade arrest under an International Criminal Court warrant may face criminal charges.
He said the Department of Justice’s initial investigation found that the National Bureau of Investigation had attempted to serve the warrant and is now identifying those who may have conspired to help the senator escape.
The DOJ is also investigating reports that sniper shots were fired from the Senate building toward an NBI vehicle to determine whether they were part of an orchestrated escape plan.
Vida said the investigation remains ongoing but described the Senate Office of the Sergeant-at-Arms’ shooting at the NBI as unjustified, saying the Senate was not under attack.
Dela Rosa remains at large over alleged crimes against humanity, while Sen. Robin Padilla is facing an obstruction of justice complaint for allegedly helping him flee.
