The Department of Agriculture (Department of Agriculture) announced a suggested retail price of ₱53 per kilo for local rice as part of an effort to balance fair earnings for farmers with more affordable prices for consumers.
Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. said the SRP is not a price ceiling but a guide to ensure reasonable pricing across the supply chain, including importers, traders, and retailers.
He explained that the pricing framework considers landed import costs of ₱37 to ₱38 per kilo, with a capped retail price of ₱50 for imported rice to account for logistics and other expenses.
The government said the ₱50 imported rice cap will be fully enforced next week after a transition period for retailers and consumers.
Officials emphasized that the pricing scheme aims to ensure all stakeholders in the rice value chain still earn fair margins while keeping food prices stable.
