DA BOOSTS DIGITAL SURVEILLANCE OF PHILIPPINE SEAS

The Department of Agriculture (DA) has upgraded its digital surveillance system to strengthen monitoring of Philippine waters and combat illegal fishing and agricultural smuggling.

Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. and Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Director Elizer Salilig turned over new Vessel Monitoring System workstations to the Philippine Coast Guard’s National Maritime Center.

The system enables authorities to track registered fishing vessels in real time, improving enforcement of fisheries regulations and conservation measures.

Tiu Laurel said the technology will also help curb the smuggling of agricultural products entering through the country’s coastline.

He added that the initiative supports the protection of marine resources, consumers, and the livelihoods of farmers and fisherfolk.
