Filipino surfer John Mark “Marama” Tokong advanced to the second round of the WSL Philippines Pro on Sunday, Nov. 1, after defeating Brazil’s Samuel Pupo in his Championship Tour debut.
Tokong scored 16.60 points through his best waves of 8.80 and 8.00, outscoring Pupo’s 11.00.
The Siargao native used his familiarity with the island’s famous Cloud 9 waves to dominate the heat and impress the home crowd.
He capped his performance with a perfectly executed 360-degree aerial maneuver that drew loud cheers from spectators.
Tokong will face Australian surfer Ethan Ewing in the second round, with the match scheduled for late Sunday or early Monday.
