DAIRY INDUSTRY EYES 24% PRODUCTION GROWTH THIS YEAR

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) raised its forecast for Philippine dairy production this year by 24 percent to 46,000 metric tons, citing increased local supply and a growing dairy herd.

The increase follows a 20-percent rise in local dairy production to 43,300 metric tons last year, according to the National Dairy Authority (NDA).

Government efforts, including the importation of more than 1,400 dairy cattle from Australia and the development of dairy stock farms, have helped boost production.

The USDA expects output to grow further to 48,000 metric tons in 2027, although local milk yields remain low due to high production costs, poor feeding and management practices, and inadequate infrastructure.

Meanwhile, dairy consumption is projected to reach 212,000 metric tons this year, leaving the country reliant on imports estimated at 166,000 metric tons.
