Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival has warned car rental operators to be cautious of organized groups involved in the “rent-tangay” scam, where rented vehicles are sold using falsified documents.
Several businesses have already been affected by the scheme, prompting the city to coordinate with the Highway Patrol Group and local police for stronger monitoring and vehicle recovery efforts.
The warning followed a May 11 incident in Barangay Banilad, where a car dealer was briefly abducted over a P1.8-million vehicle transaction, which went viral on social media.
Authorities reminded the public that offenders will be penalized under the Anti-Carjacking Act (RA 10883).
Mayor Archival advised rental owners to verify renters’ identities, install GPS trackers, and ensure proper documentation before releasing vehicles.
