Growing advances in robotics and artificial intelligence could disrupt key pillars of the Philippine economy, particularly overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and the business process outsourcing (BPO) sector, according to concerns raised in a recent commentary on global automation trends.
The report cited China’s use of fully autonomous machines to construct a 157.79-kilometer expressway and warned that similar technologies are already reducing demand for human labor in construction, customer service, and other routine jobs.
It also noted that hedge funds are betting against outsourcing firms as AI accelerates disruption in the call center and customer experience industries worldwide.
Local experts were quoted as saying much of the country’s technical training remains focused on low-level skills, leaving the workforce unprepared for high-skill, technology-driven global demands.
The analysis warned that without urgent reforms in education and workforce development, the Philippines risks long-term economic vulnerability as automation expands.
