The Senate approved on third and final reading a bill declaring the Waling-waling (Vanda sanderiana) as the Philippines’ national orchid during a special session called by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
The measure, authored by Sen. Loren Legarda, was passed with 13 affirmative votes and no objections.
It recognizes the Waling-waling as the national orchid while retaining the Sampaguita as the country’s national flower.
The bill designates the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to lead the protection, conservation, and propagation.
It also tasks the National Museum of the Philippines with promoting the Waling-waling’s natural and cultural significance.
