President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has appointed Supreme Court Associate Justice Rodil Zalameda as the country’s next chief justice, succeeding Alexander Gesmundo, who retires after more than five years in office.
Zalameda, appointed to the Supreme Court by former president Rodrigo Duterte in 2019, has more than three decades of experience in the legal profession.
Presidential Communications Secretary Lino Cayetano said his extensive experience in the judiciary makes him qualified to lead the Supreme Court.
Zalameda has pledged to promote judicial integrity, accountability, and faster delivery of justice.
Meanwhile, Gesmundo expressed hope that the judiciary would continue facing future challenges with courage, competence, and compassion.
