The Philippines is expected to continue increasing its meat imports this year due to supply issues stemming from African swine fever (ASF), according to the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI).
In the first seven months of this year, meat imports rose by 7.8% to 757.3 million kilograms compared to 702.24 million kilograms during the same period last year.
Agriculture Assistant Secretary Arnel de Mesa indicated that the anticipated low supply will lead to higher imports in 2024.
Pork remains the dominant import, accounting for 49.2% of total imports, followed by chicken at 33.7% and beef, which saw a significant increase of 30.85%.
Meanwhile, the Philippines is dealing with a resurgence of ASF infections across 14 regions, prompting the Department of Agriculture to initiate a government-controlled vaccination program to curb its spread.
