PHILIPPINES LOSES UN SECURITY COUNCIL BID FOR 2027–2028 TERM

The Philippines failed to secure a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2027–2028 term after losing to Kyrgyzstan in voting by the UN General Assembly.

Kyrgyzstan won the Asia-Pacific seat with 142 votes in the fourth round, surpassing the required two-thirds majority of 128 votes, while the Philippines last served on the Council in 2004–2005.

Earlier rounds showed Kyrgyzstan steadily increasing its lead, culminating in final counts of 123–68 before the decisive result.

The UNSC, composed of 15 members including five permanent ones with veto power, is responsible for maintaining international peace and security.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. previously made the country’s pitch during a UNGA address in support of its bid.
