President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has appointed former senator Francis Tolentino as acting secretary of the Department of Labor and Employment, replacing Bienvenido Laguesma who stepped down due to health reasons.
Tolentino took his oath at Malacañang on Monday after losing in the 2025 senatorial elections, with his appointment made possible following the lifting of the one-year ban on appointing election losers.
Palace spokesperson Claire Castro said Marcos appointed Tolentino based on his experience in both local and national government service.
She also clarified that Laguesma’s resignation was due to medical concerns, and any decision on his next possible post will depend on his health and the President’s discretion.
Castro likewise dismissed reports of a broader Cabinet shakeup, including changes in the Department of the Interior and Local Government, saying no official confirmation has been received. The administration has yet to announce any further adjustments to key government posts following Tolentino’s appointment.
