A coalition of business leaders, academe, civil society groups, and former government officials has launched a signature campaign urging the appointment of Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian as Senate president, citing the need to restore integrity and public trust in the chamber.
The groups, including the Makati Business Club and the Management Association of the Philippines, said recent leadership changes and political tensions have damaged the Senate’s credibility, especially as it prepares for the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.
They highlighted Gatchalian’s legislative track record, fiscal reforms, and efforts to increase transparency in budget deliberations as qualifications for the post.
Meanwhile, Senate minority and majority blocs remain divided over leadership arrangements following the ouster of former Senate President Vicente Sotto III and the assumption of Alan Peter Cayetano.
The push for a “peaceful realignment” in leadership continues amid calls to ensure impartiality, stability, and public confidence in the institution.
