Meta has removed a feature from its newly launched Muse Image AI tool after criticism that it allowed public Instagram photos to be used as references for generating AI-created images without clear user consent.
The company said the feature was intended to give users a creative tool but acknowledged that it “missed the mark” following widespread privacy concerns.
The feature sparked backlash on social media, with users sharing instructions on how to prevent their public content from being used by the AI system.
The Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) also raised concerns over the potential misuse of digital likenesses and welcomed Meta’s decision to discontinue the feature.
Meta said it remains committed to improving its AI tools while responding to user feedback.
