Senator JV Ejercito backed proposals for voluntary pay cuts among government officials to help fund fuel subsidies and cash assistance amid rising oil prices.
He said trimming salaries and allowances, or even donating portions of income, could provide support to vulnerable sectors while demonstrating government austerity.
Ejercito emphasized that such measures should be voluntary but noted that leadership taking the initiative could set a strong example for others.
Tingog Party-list Rep. Jude Acidre also supported the proposal, recalling that lawmakers have reduced compensation during past crises.
The suggested move aims to ease the impact of global oil price pressures, particularly those linked to tensions in the Middle East.
