Korean Air has banned the transport of roosters on flights from the United States to the Philippines, a move welcomed by animal rights advocates campaigning against cockfighting.
The airline confirmed it has suspended the shipment of roosters of all ages on the affected routes, saying it remains committed to the lawful and safe transport of live animals.
Animal welfare groups, including Animal Wellness Action and PETA Philippines, said the decision followed months of advocacy and investigations into the trade of fighting birds.
They also claimed that US breeders supply large numbers of roosters used in the Philippines’ cockfighting industry, which generates significant gambling activity.
A local breeder, however, warned that the restriction could have a major impact on the industry, which relies heavily on US-bred fighting stock.
