The Philippine Senate will convene the impeachment court to hear Vice President Sara Duterte’s trial on June 3, following her impeachment by the House for alleged corruption and an assassination plot.
Senate President Francis Escudero announced that hearings would start in late July after new senators are seated.
The trial became a major issue during the recent midterm elections, which determined the senators who would serve as jurors.
Duterte needs at least nine votes from the 24-seat Senate to be acquitted, or she faces removal and a permanent ban from public office.
Meanwhile, President Marcos expressed willingness to reconcile with the Duterte family but emphasized that the Senate will handle the impeachment process independently.
