The municipal government of Vintar in Ilocos has received a P53-million yarn production facility from the DOST-Philippine Textile Research Institute to support local cotton farmers and weavers.
The facility, capable of producing 150 kilos of yarn from pineapple fiber and cotton, combines a P13-million municipal property with P40-million worth of equipment from DOST-PTRI.
Officials hope the project will promote the use of locally made yarns despite higher costs compared to polyester alternatives.
DOST-PTRI chief Julius Leaño Jr. noted that there is a market for locally produced textile materials.
The facility aims to strengthen the local textile industry and provide sustainable livelihood opportunities.
