Faculty members opposed the Commission on Higher Education’s (CHED) proposed overhaul of the college’s general education curriculum, saying it would significantly reduce humanities subjects and put teachers at risk of displacement.
The draft plan cuts mandatory GE units from 36 to 18 and replaces standalone courses in philosophy, ethics, literature, and history with broader skills-based subjects.
Critics argued that the change weakens liberal education, lacks proper consultation with educators, and could lead to job losses without clear government safeguards or funding for retraining.
CHED defended the reform as a “reframing” aligned with senior high school learning and said it would still retain core content while ensuring faculty could be absorbed through restructuring.
Faculty groups, however, warned that the proposal could harm education quality and vowed continued opposition if concerns are not addressed.
