The Department of Justice (DOJ) said Sen. Robin Padilla could waive his right to present a defense if he fails to attend next week’s preliminary investigation into an obstruction of justice complaint.
The case involves allegations that Padilla helped Sen. Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa evade an International Criminal Court arrest warrant in May.
DOJ Undersecretary Ian Dato said the case could be resolved based on existing evidence if Padilla does not appear.
He clarified that the subpoena does not mean Padilla has been found guilty, as the investigation is still at the preliminary stage.
Padilla has admitted that dela Rosa rode with him when leaving the Senate as authorities tried to serve the warrant.
