DOE SAYS ENERGY SECTOR PREPARED FOR ‘THE BIG ONE’

The Department of Energy said contingency plans and disaster-response simulations are in place to minimize disruptions to the country’s energy infrastructure in the event of “The Big One,” a projected magnitude 7.2 earthquake along the West Valley Fault.

DOE officials said power and oil sector stakeholders have designated responsibilities to ensure the rapid restoration of damaged facilities, with areas under Manila Electric Company expected to face significant impacts.

The agency also continues restoration efforts for consumer connections affected by the recent Mindanao earthquake, with teams from the DOE and the National Electrification Administration deployed on the ground.

Meanwhile, the Civil Aeronautics Board directed airlines to offer flexible rebooking options for passengers affected by earthquake-related flight disruptions.

Government agencies are also facilitating aid deliveries and accelerating repairs at General Santos International Airport to restore commercial operations within a week.
