The National Task Force for the West Philippine Sea reaffirmed that Bajo de Masinloc is an integral part of Philippine territory and announced that the Department of Foreign Affairs has filed a diplomatic protest against China over a floating structure detected within the shoal.
Aerial surveillance by the Armed Forces of the Philippines and monitoring by the Philippine Coast Guard confirmed the presence of a 6-by-6-meter platform with an apparent antenna and individuals onboard.
Philippine authorities said the structure’s nature and purpose are still being assessed, while stressing that actions will continue to be guided by international law, including the 1982 UNCLOS and the 2016 arbitral ruling.
Analysts have raised concerns that if the installation becomes permanent, it could alter the status quo and further escalate tensions in the West Philippine Sea.
China, meanwhile, reiterated its sovereignty claim over the shoal and described its activities in the area as legitimate.
