Philippine Airlines (PAL) survived the devastating COVID-19 pandemic through a major financial restructuring, employee sacrifices, and continued operations despite severe disruptions to global aviation.
The airline reduced its debt and financing obligations by more than $2 billion through its Chapter 11 restructuring in the United States, which it completed in December 2021.
Government-chartered repatriation flights and the transport of COVID-19 vaccines and essential medical supplies helped PAL generate revenue and maintain its operations during the crisis.
Former PAL president Gilbert Santa Maria credited thousands of employees, including flight crews, pilots, ground staff, and unions, for their dedication and willingness to make sacrifices to keep the airline flying.
Despite ongoing challenges such as rising costs, fuel-price volatility, and aging aircraft, PAL continues to invest in its fleet and passenger experience as it works toward a more sustainable future.
