Quezon City Rep. Patrick Michael Vargas urged the House of Representatives to pass House Bill No. 3771, or the proposed Autism Assistance Act, which aims to formalize support for Filipinos with autism.
The bill would establish the Global Autism Assistance Program, channeling assistance from NGOs to provinces and training health and education professionals on autism care.
Vargas emphasized that the law would ensure families affected by autism receive government support and access to the latest strategies and technologies for managing the condition.
The program includes granting NGOs the resources to implement services and selecting provinces most in need within 120 days of enactment.
Advocacy for better autism care has grown, with other lawmakers also pushing related bills, highlighting that around 1.2 million Filipinos are estimated to have autism.
