The Biliran provincial government is using its Bamboo Rehabilitation Program to reduce flooding and provide livelihood opportunities for residents.
On Wednesday, Governor Rogelio Espina and provincial employees planted 100 Bayog bamboo seedlings along riverbanks in Barangay Agpangi and Barangay Sabang, Naval.
Bayog bamboo was chosen for its ability to stabilize riverbanks, prevent soil erosion, and reduce scouring around bridges and infrastructure.
The bamboo is also versatile, serving purposes in construction, furniture-making, and as a food source, while acting as a carbon sink and slowing water flow during heavy rains.
The provincial government plans to expand the program, propagating 3,000 more seedlings for planting across major river systems in Biliran.
