The Department of Agriculture (DA) in the Cordillera region denied social media claims that Baguio chayote (sayote) is treated with formalin to extend its shelf life.
The DA clarified that the vegetable stays fresh naturally due to the region’s cool climate, high altitude, fertile soil, and steady rainfall.
Sayote is traditionally grown on trellises in these favorable conditions, eliminating the need for artificial preservatives.
Local farmers expressed concern that the false claims could harm their reputation and sales.
The DA urged the public to verify information from reliable sources and assured that Baguio sayote is fresh, safe, and chemical-free.
