Senator Francis Tolentino raised concerns about foreign submersible drones potentially operating in Philippine waters, as he led a hearing on maritime and admiralty zones.
The hearing discussed a recent discovery of a drone off the coast of Masbate and the arrest of six Chinese nationals and a Filipino involved in alleged maritime spying activities in Subic.
Tolentino suggested that these drones may be widespread throughout the Philippines, gathering information in its seas.
Rear Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad did not dismiss the possibility, stating that this could be just the “tip of the iceberg.”
The Senate panel showcased actual submersible drones and buoys found by Filipino fishermen, with Trinidad indicating a strong likelihood that these drones were deployed by China.
