Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian urged fellow senators to commute to work to better understand the daily challenges faced by public transport users.
He praised Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez for continuing a policy requiring key transport officials to commute at least once a week.
Gatchalian also cited Sen. JV Ejercito, who regularly bikes to the Senate, as an example.
Meanwhile, the DOTr said major railway projects could serve around five million passengers daily and remove up to one million vehicles from the roads once fully operational.
Gatchalian also flagged P295 million in commitment fees paid for delayed transport projects and urged the DOTr to cancel unnecessary loans.
