The ongoing Pasig-Marikina River Channel Improvement Project has helped prevent the river from overflowing and protect residents of Marikina and Pasig amid weeks of heavy rainfall, according to the DPWH.
DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon said President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered the agency to accelerate the project, which is being implemented with assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency.
The project is currently 53 percent complete and includes flood control structures, flood gates, pumping stations and other facilities to improve river capacity and water flow.
Once completed, the project is expected to reduce by about 63 percent the areas vulnerable to flooding within the Pasig-Marikina River basin.
The DPWH said the accelerated construction aims to provide stronger, long-term flood protection to communities affected by prolonged and intense rainfall.
