The Jinggoy Estrada is set to face plunder and malversation charges before the Sandiganbayan on Thursday over alleged involvement in a multibillion-peso flood control corruption scandal, according to Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla.
Remulla said the cases, recommended by the Department of Justice and reviewed by the Office of the Ombudsman, are “ripe” for filing and will be made airtight to ensure strong prosecution in court.
Prosecutors allege Estrada and several officials and contractors manipulated budgets and public bidding processes to divert public funds, with additional charges including graft, bribery, and corruption of public officials.
Estrada denied wrongdoing, saying he will continue performing his Senate duties and pointed to Senate budget monitoring records showing no evidence of alleged insertions in the 2025 DPWH budget.
Remulla also said a similar plunder case involving Senator Joel Villanueva is nearing completion and may be filed within weeks.
