The Office of the Ombudsman is conducting lifestyle checks on 107 government officials, particularly those from income-generating agencies such as the Land Transportation Office and Bureau of Customs.
Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla said more officials could be included as his office gathers additional information, following President Marcos’ directive to check the lifestyles of government officials amid the multibillion-peso flood control scandal.
Meanwhile, the Commission on Audit admitted that its shortage of field auditors remains a concern as it monitors government projects linked to the corruption probe.
COA said it still needs nearly 400 personnel despite the restoration of 332 positions, with auditors leaving for better pay, flexible work arrangements, retirement, or other government agencies.
COA Chairman Gamaliel Cordoba said the agency needs nearly P2.5 billion to establish 146 additional pre-audit teams to help detect irregularities before government funds are fully released.
