Public Works and Highways Secretary Vince Dizon described the agency’s compliance with the Accessibility Law as “terrible,” citing a lack of sidewalks and ramps in many areas.
He said the DPWH is working to improve accessibility, including widening sidewalks during the ongoing rehabilitation of EDSA.
The agency’s proposed budget for infrastructure for persons with disabilities, senior citizens, and gender-responsive facilities increased from P117 million to P510 million.
Dizon, however, admitted that the amount remains insufficient to achieve full compliance nationwide.
Lawmakers also urged the DPWH to increase funding for accessible sidewalks, walkways, and bike lanes.
