Motorcycle taxi service provider Move It has called on the government to reconsider its decision to cut its driver fleet by more than half, warning that such a move will result in significant job losses.
The company is opposing an order from the government’s technical working group (TWG) to reduce its fleet from 14,662 riders to just 6,836 within 30 days, a reduction of 7,826 jobs.
The order is in line with a 2020 consensus capping the number of riders for motorcycle taxi companies, with industry leaders like Angkas and JoyRide receiving larger allowances.
Move It has also been instructed to halt onboarding new riders for a year and stop operating in Cebu City and Cagayan de Oro City due to a lack of authority in those areas.
The company plans to file a motion for reconsideration, arguing that the rider cap based on 2020 pandemic-era guidelines no longer reflects the current transport demand, especially as motorcycle taxis have grown in popularity.
