Newly installed Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano denied claims that his sudden election was intended to influence the upcoming impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, stressing that the leadership change was not politically motivated.
In his inaugural address, Cayetano vowed that the Senate would uphold fairness and evidence-based judgment in the impeachment process, warning against decisions driven by political affiliation or lack of proof.
He also reminded senators that they would be under public scrutiny, saying the Senate itself is “on trial” as it handles the case.
Cayetano called for unity among lawmakers despite political divisions, citing national crises such as economic pressures and corruption issues.
He pledged to respect all branches of government and urged colleagues to act responsibly and without regret in their decisions.
