HOUSE VOTES AGAIN TO IMPEACH VP SARA DUTERTE

The House of Representatives of the Philippines has overwhelmingly voted for the second impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte, with 255 lawmakers in favor, 26 against, and nine abstentions, formally transmitting the articles of impeachment to the Senate for trial.

The decision, based on Committee Report 261 and House Resolution 989, follows a prior impeachment that was voided by the Supreme Court, and lawmakers said the move aims to ensure accountability and uphold constitutional processes.

House leaders stressed that impeachment is a constitutional duty that must apply equally regardless of political affiliation, while Duterte’s legal team said the burden now rests on the prosecution to prove its allegations before the Senate impeachment court.

Religious leaders and civil groups also weighed in, urging lawmakers to act with conscience and demanding accountability in government.

Protests outside the Batasan complex supported the impeachment, calling it a step toward ending impunity, while Duterte allies criticized the move as politically motivated.
