MODERN TOOLS HELP STRENGTHEN DISASTER RESPONSE IN THE PHILIPPINES

Modern technology is helping the Philippines strengthen disaster preparedness, with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) using artificial intelligence (AI) and other tools to improve hazard monitoring and response.

The Handa Integrated Platform for Preparedness and Response uses AI to provide information on different hazards and allows the public to submit incident reports for verification.

AI is also being developed by PAGASA to improve weather forecasting and shorten data processing time, while its PANaHON app provides near-real-time weather information.

DOST has also deployed a Mobile Command and Control Vehicle in Tuguegarao that can serve as a mobile command center in remote areas during emergencies.

DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. said continued investment in science, early warning systems, geospatial technology, and AI will help authorities and communities make better decisions before disasters strike.
