Former elections commissioner Virgilio Garcillano, infamous for his involvement in the “Hello Garci” poll fraud scandal, passed away on Saturday at the age of 87.
Garcillano was found unconscious at his farmhouse in Baungon, Bukidnon, and was rushed to a hospital in Cagayan de Oro, where he was declared dead.
Following the scandal, he led a quiet life in Baungon, working in farming and engaging in community service, earning the nickname “Sir Garci” for his philanthropic efforts.
He had served as a career official at the Commission on Elections (Comelec) before being appointed election commissioner in 2004.
Garcillano’s involvement in the “Hello Garci” controversy, which allegedly involved influencing the 2004 presidential election, made him a central figure in the political crisis that prompted calls for then-President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s resignation.
