Following reports naming the Philippines as the “bullying capital of the world,” the Department of Education (DepEd) has pledged to strengthen its anti-bullying efforts for the 2025-2026 school year.
DepEd Assistant Secretary Jocelyn Andaya said new guidelines have been issued to schools, and bullying prevention is included in the Operation Balik Eskwela program.
To improve student safety, schools will implement metal detectors, bag checks, and increase security personnel, with support from local government units.
The department is also addressing shortages in guidance counselors by appointing trained teachers as “guidance designates” and is working to fill principal vacancies.
Coordination with barangays, LGUs, and local police will ensure security during key school hours as classes begin on June 16.
