House Nuclear Energy Committee Chair Rep. Mark Cojuangco criticized the Department of Energy (DOE) during a congressional hearing, accusing it of overreliance on intermittent renewable energy sources such as solar and wind.
He said the agency was misleading the public about the capacity of these technologies, arguing that their limited output and storage capabilities cannot meet the country’s electricity demand, especially at night.
Cojuangco warned that current energy policies could lead to higher power prices, supply shortages, and recurring brownouts, adding that the Philippine Energy Plan fails to provide a credible long-term solution.
He also criticized the implementation of the Electric Power Industry Reform Act, saying it has not encouraged sufficient investment in new baseload generation and insisted that the DOE, not the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines, should be held accountable for recurring outages.
The lawmaker further claimed that continued reliance on inadequate planning and intermittent energy sources could worsen power instability and harm consumers.
