The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is urging Congress to decide by the second week of September whether the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) will proceed as scheduled on November 2.
Comelec Chairman George Garcia said an early decision would provide certainty for candidates and election personnel, especially with the filing of certificates of candidacy set for September 28 to October 5.
The call comes as the Senate considers a bill seeking to postpone the elections to 2028 and extend the terms of barangay and SK officials from four to five years.
Critics, including election watchdogs, oppose another postponement, warning it could face a legal challenge and raise concerns over prolonged terms of incumbent officials.
The Comelec has allocated ₱19.57 billion for the BSKE, with around ₱8 billion already spent on ballots and election personnel.
