The Philippines marked the 54th anniversary of the declaration of martial law with rallies calling for government accountability, particularly over alleged corruption and other abuses.
Security was heightened in Metro Manila, with more than 17,000 police personnel deployed and Malacañang placed under lockdown amid expected protests.
Progressive groups criticized restrictions on demonstrations, while authorities said the measures were intended to protect public safety and uphold the constitutional right to peaceful assembly.
The Philippine National Police reported that 12 rallies across the National Capital Region ended peacefully, with no major violent incidents recorded.
Senators and the German Embassy also urged Filipinos to remember the lessons of martial law and remain vigilant in defending human rights, democracy and accountability.
