PH CHESS TEAMS SUFFER SETBACKS IN WORLD OLYMPIAD ROUND 5

The Philippine men’s and women’s chess teams suffered defeats in the fifth round of the 46th World Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

The men’s squad lost narrowly to Uzbekistan 2, 1.5-2.5, after International Master Michael Concio dropped a drawn endgame against Grandmaster Abdimalik Abdisalimov.

International Master Pau Bersamina, Grandmaster Daniel Quizon and International Master Jem Garcia drew their respective matches for the Philippines.

The Filipinas fell 1-3 to 19th-seeded Spain, with Woman International Master Jan Jodilyn Fronda-Grafil securing the team’s lone victory against International Master Ann Matnadze.

The losses placed the men’s team in a tie for 46th and the women’s squad in a tie for 36th, both with six match points, as they looked to recover against Yemen and Angola in the sixth round.
