THAI NATIONAL GETS LIFE SENTENCE FOR P18M MARIJUANA SMUGGLING

A Thai woman arrested at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in 2024 was sentenced to life imprisonment for smuggling more than 13 kilograms of marijuana into the Philippines, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) said.

The Pasay City Regional Trial Court Branch 116 found Sirirut Taweesup guilty of violating the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

The court also ordered her to pay a P2 million fine.

Authorities seized 13,169 grams of dried cannabis worth around P18 million from her during an airport operation on Aug. 14, 2024.

PDEA Director General Isagani Nerez said the conviction highlights the importance of airport security, inter-agency cooperation, and strong prosecution in fighting illegal drug trafficking.
