The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) clarified that LGBTQIA+ individuals are eligible for solo parent benefits under the Expanded Solo Parents Welfare Act, provided they meet the legal requirements.
DSWD official Atty. Elen De Vibar Pasion said the law does not discriminate based on sexual orientation or gender identity.
Of the 294,649 registered solo parents nationwide, 7,259 belong to the LGBTQIA+ community.
Pasion also confirmed that LGBTQIA+ member Amanda Alvarez secured her solo parent ID after submitting the required documents.
She urged the public to avoid discriminatory comments and understand the law before judging marginalized groups.
