Fresh Carabao mangoes from the Philippines have entered the Canadian market through the country’s first commercial shipment of one metric ton, consisting of 250 cartons.
The Department of Agriculture (DA) said the shipment, sent on Sept. 18, is part of efforts to open new markets for Philippine agricultural products and increase farmers’ incomes.
Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. said expanded agricultural exports could create opportunities across the farm-to-market chain, including production, logistics, processing and distribution.
The DA is also strengthening the mango industry by consolidating more than 40 growers’ groups, addressing disease concerns and improving plant health measures needed to meet international export requirements.
Meanwhile, the Bureau of Plant Industry is pursuing expanded access for Philippine tropical fruits and other farm products in the United Kingdom, while discussions are also underway to allow UK-grown apples into the Philippine market.
